At the beginning of the 20th century, in the most important port city of the Russian Empire – Riga, the new direction of architecture Art Nouveau began its triumphant march, thanks to which today we can call Riga an Art Nouveau metropolis. Notable Latvian, German, Russian and Jewish architects have left their distinctive features in the city’s Art Nouveau houses. The walk leads through the Old Town to the Art Nouveau district in a quiet part of the center of Riga, where you can see the buildings designed by the architect Mikhail Eisenstein. Each of them is a work of art. Accompanied by a guide from the agency “Smile line”, you will walk along the famous Alberta Street, where you can see various Art Nouveau buildings – rich in ornaments, more modest, and built in the spirit of national romanticism. One of the most important values of Art Nouveau – the building must be not only beautiful, but also functional, but was it really like that?
Riga is proud of its magnificent heritage of Art Nouveau architecture. The most significant expression of Art Nouveau architecture in Riga is marked by a wide variety of individual styles ranging from highly decorative to more intellectual interpretations. The walk will lead you through Old Riga to the Art Nouveau district which features the creations of the most controversial Art Nouveau architect Mikhail Eisenstein. Each building is worth seeing and admiring in this area.
